three day weekend productivity

Color study for the silkscreen I'm working on for Crome Yellow(this awesome band from Jacksonville, FL). That font's still a bit wonky...

self portrait? dreaming of summer...

this piece was inspired by a song by the Be Good Tanyas. "Well I feel like an old hobo, all sad and lonesome and blue....well I think, the littlest birds sing the prettiest songs". I am going to experiement with coloring this digitally but I'll probably make it into a gouache painting.

Been listening to a lot of Sean Hayes.

Also also, I randomly met a really great artist I had read about a few years ago in Anthem magazine, the very talented John Breiner. Check out his online store, I dig his Tyson series.

band gig poster sketch for silkscreen

bummer that the printshop has limited hours till night classes start.

bonus that i can check out the monoprint/linocut goodness going on this semester.

there's also a letterpress studio in brooklyn that has affordable seminars(ie cheaper than most nyc continuing ed classes)and studio space. sweeeet.

this is for a really cool jacksonville, florida-based band.

c'est la vie / c'est la guerre

Dumped!

gallette des rois

I had been pining for some king cake when working on those Mardi Gras paintings, and as it turns out, yesterday was the Feast of the Epiphany. There happens to be a tasty french cake associated with this holiday (gallette des rois) that the southern King Cake I grew up with originated from. We happen to work close to an excellent french pastry shop and I scampered over to get one....we each had a slice...and I got the feve! (Baked in both the King Cake and the Gallette is a small baby or figurine...feve is french for 'bean', because they are very small).
(Further enlightenment via wikipedia).

Also there is an italian easter 'bread' that is similar but has whole dyed eggs baked into the dough, it's lovely.

festivities...

for some reason i am still in the holiday spirit, maybe it's the anticipation of Mardi Gras, despite my geography. I found a book of photographs of Mardi Gras during the Jazz age at the library, two of these are based on those. the portrait of the girl is from dia de los muertos via coney island.

sorry for the long wait. also,
here are some show openings you should go to:

Zohar Lazar @ Jeff Bailey, 01/08/08

Naho Kabuta @ Destination NYC, 01/08/08

Cannaday Chapman @ Showroom NYC, 01/15/08
