A War, Before and After - Home Fires

I highly recommend making a beeline for the New York Times' Home Fires blog, where several talented veteran writers I'm honored to know have posted some great personal accounts from the Iraq War, in observance of the ten year anniversary of the invasion. Read on here.

So excited for and proud of the writers featured in this piece--way to go Josiah, Maurice, Jake, Mariette, Roy, Matt G., Matt M, Phil, and all the rest!

Alfred I. duPont Awards Comic

The nonfiction comic piece I did for the Columbia University School of Journalism's duPont Awards, Passing the Baton, went live today! You can check out the comic here. Thanks to Abi Wright and Beth Canipe for the fun assignment!

*Edit*: The comic is no longer available on the Columbia Journalism School website, so I've posted the full comic here.

Sketches From Last Night

Last night in the studio: drawing Ai Wei Wei, listening to Beyonce. Life is interesting. I recommend checking out the doumentary Ai Wei Wei: Never Sorry. These are drawings for a secret project-- I can tell you about it in a week when it's done!

Bethesda Ink Page Nine

I like the way this page sorted itself out. I am improving my lettering, but had so many other ideas on how to make letters and design things after I finished this ten pager. I will wait to post the full version until closer to the publication date. I am pretty happy with it. I'm going to visit Walter Reed again on Tuesday, this time I think I will focus on getting good drawings rather than good stories. Carrying around an audio recorder makes me feel like a jerk, so I'm not sure I'll use it. I have new stories to work on and that's been occupying my thoughts. Gearing up also to print some comics for the Small Press Expo. I aim to have copies of The City Chickens, Bethesda (Pt. 1), and Haditha Katrina (Pt. 1) at the expo.

I've recently read this essay by Josiah White, an Iraq War veteran and former Marine, who I have been in touch with and am working with on a comic story. It is beautifully done, read it when you can, it's very good.

Status Quo Ante Bellum at the Society of Illustrators

The reception for Illustrators 54: Sequential-Series, Moving and Uncommissioned Works is this Friday from 6pm until 9pm. I am really excited. The admission is $40 for non-members, but the show will be up for a few weeks (until January 21st) so if you're in that neighborhood or need an arty weekend jaunt, I recommend checking it out. A load of incredible artists are represented in the show, and it's a great honor to be included in this year's exhibit and book.

Handy Dandy

This piece was made to accompany a news story about a cop who gets his badge back after getting the boot. The AD at The Portland Mercury, Justin "Scrappers" Morrison is a pretty funny guy, and super talented, check out this cool interview.

There's another cool thing to read, about the Best/Worst Mercury covers. If you scroll down to nearly the end you can find his musings, which I found to be thought-provoking and hysterical.

Thanks Scrappers!
