More Photos from The Characters Show

Here are a few more snapshots of the evening. On February 1st, I had a solo show at LaunchPad in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, documenting ONE HUNDRED friendly, contemporary cartoonist's faces. It was lots of fun (and lots of work). Special thanks to Robyn Chapman, Diana Ho, Christopher M. Duffy, Edwin Vazquez, Nick Zutrau, Maki Naro for their help (And Connie for the chocolate!)

Joe Bonham Project on the Cartoon Picayune

(Photo credit: Josh Kramer, Cartoon Picayune.)
This past weekend, the Joe Bonham Project's second public exhibition was held at the Pepco Edison Place Gallery in Downtown D.C. The reception was well attended and the feedback was incredible, it has been a great experience working with so many wonderful veterans alongside some seriously talented and incredibly gracious artists.

Josh Kramer of the Cartoon Picayune has some nice things to share about the opening, check out his coverage here on the Cartoon Picayune website.

Victor Juhasz posted some really fun photos on his Drawger page of the installation with a few of the other artists, you can see the photos and his reflections on the whole process here.

Gouache Painting: Finished

This piece is going up in a sex-ed themed show at Launchpad next Saturday, 2/25. Launchpad is a community space on Franklin Avenue in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. It's curated by C.M. Duffy.

In other news, I'll be traveling to Walter Reed Medical Center with a few other artists and a reporter from The New York Times. Stay tuned for drawings from that adventure.

Society of Illustrators Reception

Whew! What a fun night! It was nice catching Anelle Miller and Joan Chiverton and hearing some of the interesting things the Society is involved with.

I rudely interrupted one of G.B. Tran's pals to tell him how much I enjoy his work, only to realize I had met him the previous year through a mutual friend. New York is crazy! Check out G.B. Tran's book, Vietnamerica here.

Here's a photo of one of his award-winning pages. It's really beautiful.

Some silliness at the party.

I really like the folks there, they are good people. The show is on view through January 21st, and they have a new animation screening room downstairs, be sure to go see it if you have a moment. It's free and as I mentioned, they are incredibly nice folks.

Status Quo Ante Bellum at the Society of Illustrators

The reception for Illustrators 54: Sequential-Series, Moving and Uncommissioned Works is this Friday from 6pm until 9pm. I am really excited. The admission is $40 for non-members, but the show will be up for a few weeks (until January 21st) so if you're in that neighborhood or need an arty weekend jaunt, I recommend checking it out. A load of incredible artists are represented in the show, and it's a great honor to be included in this year's exhibit and book.

Framing and Puppet Show

I have been busy this month preparing materials for the Society of Illustrators reception and annual I am a part of this year. I've also been helping some new friends with puppet propping for their forthcoming show, The Master of Prayer. (I made a book out of paper bags and cardboard, and drew the illustrations--I neglected to get photos of the book-- but it was a fun assignment!) These guys are incredibly talented and high energy--there will be live music accompanying very dramatic puppet action, with an occasional human soliloquy. I am waiting on details about their upcoming shows this month in Brooklyn and beyond, details will be posted here as I get them.

Framed and dropped off my pieces for the Society of Illustrators Sequential Show. Come see!

Foxy Lady

I'm in this Pin-Up themed show Saturday night. Come by!

Nearby there is a food truck selling real crawfish and catfish and fried pickles. I'll be eating there most of the day, I suspect.

Eric White at Sloan 9/16

Eric White at Sloan this week!
I am especially interested in that Hot Rats painting. I bet these will be excellent. Eric has had a ton of international shows lately and was at Art Basel Miami this year. It's good to hear he's having a show in the city that I can go check out in person. See you there!

Lucky Gallery News

A piece I embroidered for our Missed Connections gallery show at LUCKY GALLERY. The opening reception for the show will be the same day of our Attracktion puppet performance, come check us out!

----------------

STRINGS ATTACHED will be performing a puppet show at Lucky Gallery called ATTRACKTION, a rumination on the Missed Connections listings on Craigslist that follows three narratives of individuals through the New York City subway system, as they spot and track objects of their desire. Missed Connections is a public forum where people can post a personal ad expressing a desire to reconnect with someone they saw in their daily travels. Featuring the journeys of a wayfaring minstrel, an imaginative but shy woman, and a helpful purple monster, the show takes the audience with our puppets on a rainy day train ride.

ATTRACKTION and STRINGS ATTACHED artist reception is a Lucky Sunday event on Sept 27 from 3:00 to 6:00pm. Puppet performance is at 3:30.

Laura Arena, owner of Lucky Gallery in Red Hook, wrote a cool bit about the puppet show and put it up on their site. Be sure to check out the opening reception, featuring our 2D work and puppet performance, as well as pieces by Hannah Kasper, and refreshments. A super awesome time will be had by all!
Also there were some very nice pages devoted to yours truly, Diana Ho, and Suzan Choy! Thanks Laura!

Destination Art Space, a gallery within an upscale boutique merging fashion and art, is excited to announce a group exhibition entitled “TORAPOTE - ride it! –“. This exhibition features nine New York based artists’ paintings, photographs, drawings, and a personal collection of vintage Japanese motorcycles.

The High Line finally opened after their long efforts, and this is one of the historical moments in New York. Plus, summer is around the corner! A lot of outdoor events are longing to see you. So, let’s go out with your TORAPOTE (means ‘transportation’ here)!

What would you ride? Trains, cars, motorcycles, airplanes, bikes, horses, or something else?

For this exhibition, the gallery walls will be filled with varied artwork of TORAPOTE by the selected artists. Perhaps, you will be able to discover a unique idea to fit your needs. This is an early summer exhibition that explores a broad meaning of transportation.

*Special thanks to Rodney Dickson for his motorcycle collection as a part of installation.

Quetzalcoatl is the prince of parties

Sarah Ritch was right. Quetzalcoatl rules. I think this will be part of my next series.

The Birth of Venus show at Skummi + Co. on Saturday night was spectacular! Enjoy some photos!

Also, I didn't realize that Kurt McRobert has a website now. Follow his blog as well!

I'm printing a book of drawings, I don't think they will be ready for mocca, I may do a few xerox versions. Stay tuned!
