Sketchbook: Writers on War at The Strand

I enjoyed the Writers on War panel discussion among veterans, writers, veteran writers, and creators hosted by The Strand yesterday evening, and thought I'd share some of the drawings from my sketchbook of the speakers.

Peter Molin introduces while audience listens.
Adrian Bonenberger reads from his latest, Afghan Post.

Sketch Night at Society of Illustrators

Having fun in the sketchbook! The grey paper and chisel-point black marker were really fun to work with. I tried to make the faces cartoony and keep it playful. I am a big fan of the tiny lady at the bottom right corner of the last page.

Squids and Dudes

Sketching in the studio on Friday, trying to find the etymology of the 'f word', and also drawing from video stills from the only known footage of a giant squid in habitat.

Train Sketchbook

I'm drawing in my sketchbook again, trying to reboot and draw for fun. I got some Tombow markers that are interesting, though I miss the Pentel color brush pens they used to carry at the art store. Here's some people in Brooklyn riding the D and 4 trains.

Dadsville Comic

Here's a tiny preview of a two page comic I did for Dadsville, a father-themed comics anthology, about meeting my biological father in early July. The anthology is due later this year.

Grand Comics Festival + Chicago Alternative Comics Expo

I'm tabling at the Grand Comics Festival this Saturday and Sunday, June 8th and 9th in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Come check out my newest veteran comics stories! If you missed me at the Brooklyn Zine Fest, this is a great chance to get copies of the color veteran comics I printed in March.

I'm tabling at the Chicago Alternative Comics Expo in two weeks, June 15th and 16th. It's my first time in Chicago, I'm looking forward to seeing all the incredibly talented comics creators there. I planned to debut Invisible Wounds, a 16 page story about an Iraq War Army veteran who is diagnosed with PTSD, but the debut has been pushed back to September for SPX. I will have brand new copies of Where Eden Once Stood, my new color collection of three veteran stories, and a small batch of the second printing of the popular mini comic, City Chickens.

Studio Yolo Comic

I was the guest writer at Studio Yolo this month, here's the comic I made. I found that working from my own script was less of a challenge and allowed me to take it in a more personal direction. I should do diary comics like this. It's a bit of a leak, since the rest of the comics submissions for this month's challenge won't go live for a few more days. I took studio mate/fellow YOLO brolo Dean Haspiel's advice and kept everything simple. Click to read.

Please come see this show, it's only up for two weeks, and there's a lot of interesting sculptural pieces, as well as drawing and photography. Gonna be a fun time at the opening!

Brooklyn Zine Fest Preview

I made some drawings for a zine about my recent trip to Hattiesburg to interview my veteran friend Nathan. I used a Pentel brush that I don't normally use, I love the grey tone and dry brush, it's super fun. Can't wait to print these.

Ingrid Rios' Untitled Comic Project

I had the opportunity to read the first five pages of Ingrid Rios' memoir about her life-threatening eating disorder. Her drawing is incredible, she's come so far artistically in the years I've known her, and the story is powerful. It is emotionally honest, raw, and well-done. You must read this.

I drew some character studies and thumbnails for a short, four page story I'm working on about my friend Nichole, who served in the Army National Guard in Iraq. It'll be part of a zine I'm making of shorter (4 page) veteran stories for the Brooklyn Zine Fest in April.

Good Times at The Drawing Center

A few weeks ago I had the honor and privilege of speaking about my involvement with the Joe Bonham Project, an artist activist group that seeks to raise awareness about wounded veterans (physical as well as psychological traumas).

I was nervous about speaking, so I tried out this neat trick I learned from Lacy Rhoades. He once had to give a speech in front of all the staff at his job (he's a programmer for Etsy and also a talented photographer). Before he started the speech, he quietly took a picture of the crowd at the podium with his iPhone. Looking back at the photo I took now, I am amazed at how kind and sweet everyone in the crowd was--I couldn't see it clearly at the time because of my pre-speech jitters. It ended up going well and I had a really great time. A lot of fabulous questions were asked and really helped me think about my work in new ways. So thanks to the friends reading this who came out and showed your support, you are loved and appreciated! And I hope you think you look lovely in the photograph below.

I also took a photograph of myself in the downstairs bathroom at the Drawing Center because:

a) The entire space has been remodeled and it is a really lovely restroom, especially for a public restroom (in New York, no less!)
b) I thought I should document the experience; it was handy I thought I looked pretty fly in my fancy dress, with my new haircut. I'm also showing support for one of the veterans I met at Bethesda in August, Nathan Rimpf, with a wristband his sister designed. His family sells them for $1 to help with the bills, but you have to beg them to take your money, they pretty much give them to everyone they meet. There's a great photo album on his support page on Facebook, documenting where in the world all the wristbands have made it to, it's amazing.  You can check it out here: Where in the World are Nathan's Wristbands?

Alfred I. duPont Awards Comic

The nonfiction comic piece I did for the Columbia University School of Journalism's duPont Awards, Passing the Baton, went live today! You can check out the comic here. Thanks to Abi Wright and Beth Canipe for the fun assignment!

*Edit*: The comic is no longer available on the Columbia Journalism School website, so I've posted the full comic here.
